Adversity

I want to share a lesson I've learned from my own experiences with adversity. When I was younger, I faced some significant tragedies that were incredibly challenging. It was hard to find balance and move forward through those tough times.

Recently, I've come to realize that without those experiences, I wouldn't be the person I am today. Reflecting on the past few years, particularly 2020, has reinforced this for me. I remember a conversation where someone was eager to leave 2020 behind and look forward to 2021. My response was, “Actually, 2020 has been quite a positive year for me.”

This reaction might seem startling to some. I’ve heard critiques like, “That’s tone-deaf, it’s been a tough year,” and I understand where they’re coming from. Every year, every day, presents its own set of challenges. While 2020 has been difficult for many, I’ve found it to be a year filled with unexpected blessings.

I’ve faced my share of hardships. I lost a sibling when I was 14, a devastating experience that could easily be viewed as the worst day of my life. However, that very day set off a chain of events that has helped me grow and evolve in ways I might never have otherwise.

The key point here is that great adversity can become a great blessing. It’s crucial to recognize that if you let adversity weigh you down and define you negatively, it can be overwhelming. I acknowledge that struggles like debt, divorce, and emotional or physical pain are incredibly tough and valid. I empathize deeply with those facing such challenges.

However, if you’re reading this, take a moment to appreciate that you’re still here. There’s a lot to be grateful for simply because you’re alive and have the chance to make something positive out of your struggles.
