Mind the Gap

I don't know if any of you have read the book Raise Your Game: High-Performance Secrets from the Best of the Best by Alan Stein Jr.

I was preparing for a podcast conversation with Alan and building a relationship with him. One of the things he says in this book that I thought was great is, "It’s the gap between knowing and doing that separates all performers."

You can be an elite athlete. You can be a parent, you can be in business or sales. It doesn't matter what you are. We're all performing in some way, somehow, something. It is the gap between knowing and doing.

The more you shrink that gap, that's where your performance, ability, accomplishment, success, achievement, whatever it may be, is going to lie.

Mind that gap.

If you're not familiar with the term, "mind your gap," it's the railroad reference.

If you've ever been on a subway, there's that gap between the car and the platform. Mind that gap just like you would in a situation where you're about to get on a subway or rail car.

In our business, in our life, in everything we do, it's "mind that gap between knowing and doing." The tighter that gap gets, the better off you're going to perform.

It's not about knowing more. It's what you are doing.
