Developing a stronger connection will always outpace improving skills.
All right, let me unpack this a little bit. If we develop a stronger connection with those that we interact with, those that we work with, and maybe those that we supervise, what do we do? We take the skills that they currently have in place, and we magnify them without ever changing the level of current skill.
Why?
Because those barriers that hold back the effectiveness, or the ability for people to display their skills, get mitigated.
Why?
Connection is the difference between someone feeling appreciated, safe, and belonging. Embrace challenges to take their current skill level to a higher display.
When people don't feel safe and aren’t connected or don't understand, their skills are minimized.
We can try to improve skills all we want, but without developing a stronger connection, those skills will never be deployed at their full potential.
If we make people feel safe, their understanding will improve too. Their current skills are going to be deployed at a higher level. It will create an environment to improve skills.
Build a stronger connection with people.
You'll be amazed by it.
What happens to their skill level without doing any skills training?
It's unbelievable.
I've experienced it.
I've seen it happen.
So remember that developing a stronger connection will always outpace improving skills. It doesn't mean you don't need to improve your skills, but develop a stronger relationship first.
