IDL142 Season 3: 5 Lessons I Learned

How can you make a genuinely positive impact on the future leaders and workers of the world? Do you love sports? Would you be prepared to learn as a leader while encouraging the next generation to be the best versions of themselves?

Hey there! I’m excited to share this solo episode with you. Today I want to share a few lessons I learned with you this fall when I volunteered to be a coach for my son’s football team.

IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:

  • Trying something new - 02:29

  • Kids deserve to be led well - 05:30

  • If you don't quit, you will never lose - 10:54

  • You will never regret investing in others - 13:34

  • Lessons come in layers - 15:07

Trying something new

We can get reenergized when we learn something new or are in new situations.
— Tyler Dickerhoof

When you try something new, you are putting yourself in a position to meet new people, try new things, and learn lessons that you wouldn’t have been exposed to before.

Kids deserve to be led well

1 - Coaching kids teaches them that life is not about climbing the social ladder or gaining many titles. It is actually about learning how to be a great team member.

[These kids] aren’t learning about how to be a great soccer teammate, they’re learning about how to be a great teammate in life, and that’s where the youth, young kids, deserve to be led well.
— Tyler Dickerhoof

2 - Coaching youth players is how you can develop the next generation of workers and leaders.

-        What should these kids expect from their future leaders and managers? Can they be taught that a coach can have humility?

-        Why would you shame a kid and be passive-aggressive? They need to be taught, and when you teach them well, they lay the right foundations for their future and what they can - and should - expect from good people in their futures.

3 - Admit when you are wrong and take ownership of faults and mistakes:

-        Not taking a time-out

-        Calling the wrong play

-        Not doing your job

If you don’t quit, you will never lose

1 - We lost when we quit:

-        A player was frustrated and gave up on a play

-        He quit the players on the field

-        He quit the players on the bench

-        He quit every coach and player in the entire program

-        He quit on himself

When we don’t quit, we never lose. Yeah, sports games, they have a clock, but life doesn’t.
— Tyler Dickerhoof

2 - Stay in the fight

3 - The game of life has no clock

If you’re thinking about the one rather than the many, it’s much easier to shift your focus away from what all of these other people think.
— Emily Jaenson

You will never regret investing in others

When you put your time and effort into teaching someone that is willing to learn, it is never wasted. If you work with the right people who connect with your words, your actions can have a great impact on them and their successes.

Use your influence and wisdom to benefit and uplift those around you. Even though it was a large amount of time, the rewards are worth it.

You will never regret investing in others because investing in others is a return to you. The rewards are always worth it.
— Tyler Dickerhoof

Lessons come in layers

It is tough to be fully prepared in a new situation. Both you and your mentees will learn in phases because you adjust and learn as the lessons unfold.

-        Learning a new role comes in layers for leaders

-        It's hard to be fully prepared for a new situation so be open and respond to what happens

-        Be secure enough to ask for help and take it!
