EP173 - The Real Reason You Are Not Making More Money with Gil Winch

In this episode of the Impact Driven Leader Podcast, host Tyler Dickerhoof sits down with Gil Winch, a PhD, social entrepreneur, and founder of Call Yachol, a company known for its groundbreaking work in hiring underrepresented groups, such as people with disabilities and ex-cons.

Gil shares his inspiring approach to leadership, emphasizing the importance of empathy and caring for employees as individuals. He discusses the untapped potential in hiring those who are often overlooked and how doing so can strengthen companies and communities alike. From the failures of DEI initiatives to the economic benefits of inclusive hiring, Gil offers a fresh perspective on how leaders can make meaningful, impactful changes.

Join us as we explore why pushing employees to succeed might be the wrong approach, and why creating a happier, more inclusive workforce should be every leader’s goal.

Meet Gil Winch

Gil Winch Ph.D. is a social entrepreneur and founder of CY (Call Yachol), a unique 100% Underdog company comprised primarily of people with severe disabilities. Harnessing over 20 years of experience as a leading organizational consultant, Dr. Winch developed a new and disruptive managerial model that goes from screening to onboarding to managing those who others overlook–Underdogs. The lessons learned at CY in the past 15 years and the surprising success CY has enjoyed as a social for-profit, demonstrated the importance of sharing CY's playbook with other companies who wish to enhance their diversity outcomes. His book Winning with Underdogs: How Hiring the Least Likely Candidates Can Spark Creativity, Improve Service, and Boost Profits for Your Business (McGraw Hill 9-2022) was written with that purpose in mind.

As a keynote speaker, Dr. Winch has shared the stage with Bill Clinton and others and his recent TED Talk, ‘How We Can Use the Hiring Process to Bring Out the Best in People’, was filmed during the pandemic in 2020.

Dr. Winch is the recipient of numerous awards for social entrepreneurship and in 2011 was chosen by Israel’s leading economic newspaper (The Marker) as one of the 100 biggest influencers on the Israeli economy. Having been diagnosed with terminal cancer over 20 years ago, Gil's personal story is as inspiring as his work.

He earned his Ph.D. in Psychology from Tel Aviv University in Israel where he lives with his wife and two Vizslas.

“I don’t think you should be necessarily pushing people to succeed at work. I think you should be pushing them to be happier, and that doesn’t always align.”
