IDL93 Season 2: A Leadership Convoy with Hal Donaldson

Have you ever felt daunted by a problem and ended up not trying anything to fix it? Why should you choose small visions instead of tall visions? How do you define yourself in the world?

I’m glad to be sharing my conversation with Hal Donaldson with you. Hal is the founder and CEO of Convoy of Hope, one of the largest aid organizations working in the United States. They deliver food aid to poverty-stricken communities as well as areas suffering from natural disaster. Today Hal shares his passion for the organization as well as his leadership lessons. We look into how you can navigate and achieve your desires and vision.

Meet Hal Donaldson

Hal Donaldson is the founder and CEO of Convoy of Hope, a faith-based, non-profit organization that leads compassion – evangelism efforts across the United States and around the world.

Through Convoy of Hope, children and families receive the message of Jesus and humanitarian assistance through community outreaches, international children’s feeding programs, job training for mothers, agriculture initiatives, and disaster relief. More than $1.5 billion worth of food and supplies have been distributed to more than 180 million people.

Charity Navigator, America's largest and most-utilized independent evaluator of charities, has awarded Convoy of Hope the prestigious 4-star rating for 18 consecutive years. Only 1 percent of charities in the United States have reached this achievement.

Donaldson served as editor-in-chief of the Evangel magazine for 13 years. He is an award-winning journalist and speaker. He has authored more than 30 books, including Disruptive Compassion: Becoming the Revolutionary You Were Born to Be and Your Next 24 Hours: One Day of Kindness Can Change Everything.

  • Tragedies don’t define you - 09:10

  • Choose small visions instead of tall visions - 14:51

  • Find the right people - 21:12

Tragedies don’t define you

Difficult or terrible things that happen to you may force you to reckon with some difficult situations, emotions, or experiences, but they do not define you.

Your actions, your choices, and your response to struggle are what define you.

Choose small visions instead of tall visions

Help one person, help two people. Do not let the scope of the problem stop you from doing anything to solve it.

Universal hunger is an issue, and you can help to alleviate that problem by bringing someone a sandwich, buying them lunch, or helping at your local soup ticket.

Find the right people

Leaders need to make sure that they are hiring the right people for their organizations and teams.

Even if the need is great, and you have space to fill, you still need to vet your people and see if they are genuine and truly interested in the work that your business aims to do and achieve in the community.

This is especially important if you are trying to find a successor.
